Phenomenal Woman : Nykita Garnett

Posted by AfroElle On 10:16 AM

Having grown up in two different continents, 24 year old Nykita Garnett acquired a unique perspective of life and a great love for diverse interests.Originally from Liberia, West Africa, Nykita represented her country in Miss Africa USA 2010. Nykita also goes by the name Nyna Touch; a name given to her by a friend. This name goes a long way to describe the unique ‘touch’ in Nykita’s blend of Soul, Pop, Soukous and Zouk music and energetic performances.

Nykita who currently resides in Atlanta, GA divides her time to accommodate her songwriting, working as a columnist, hosting events and her job as a senior anchor at African Premier Television. Nykita is also a classically trained vocalist and has been a professional African dancer for many years. She is no stranger to the stage, Nykita is currently recording her debut album which will be released this year.

Lets meet her:

Nykita's ABC

Interdependent, Loving, Tenacious are three words that describe who Iam.

Beauty and Miss Africa USA 2010

"I believe Liberian women, like many other African women, are stunning. What is more impressive than that beauty is the intellect, strength and complexity of Liberian women. The fact that we are the first African nation with a female president speaks volumes about the caliber of women and men in Liberia."~ Nykita to UGPulse

I represented my country Liberia in the Miss Africa USA 2010 pageant, I learned a lot about what my interests/talents were and how I could use them to improve the world around me. A woman of substance’s beauty is internal and therefore external. She understands her importance and values her influence in all that she does.

'giving back'

Nyikita on giving back: “Philanthropy is the new black so throw some of it on”

I developed the I, Africa Campaign the Summer of 2010. This program highlights various socioeconomic ways to empower those of African descent globally through self improvement which leads to the betterment of our people as a whole. The I, Africa Campaign works with various organizations here in the United States and in Africa to empower the individual and the community. In 2011, for example, we will be working with the International Rescue Committee, United Way and grassroots organizations in Liberia. The activities are mostly volunteer based and can range from collecting goods for the less fortunate to speaking to young women on the importance of their health.

I'm passionate about the empowerment of all people of African descent. It is of the upmost importance to me that we embrace the rich culture that we come from and find strength from it to better Africa. This is my life’s work.

'the write words'

I love writing! I always have. It really gives me a chance to use my voice via my pen to create change. I am currently freelance writing for various publications, one of which is my homeland favorite, Liberia Travel and Life.

.

Passion, Achievement and Success

Success is a of balance, peace, laughter, love and responsibility to your community. I would love to be the best person, artist, businesswoman, daughter, sister, wife and mother I can be. I hope by doing so I will leave a legacy of excellence here when my time is up. I would like to be remembered as the example I leave of what a full life looks like. The words that I write and/or say mean nothing without the actions behind them.

  1. Mattie Said,

I appreciate how fearless Nykita is. She isn't one faceted at all - from music to writing - she's well rounded and makes her country proud. She's living proof that LIB girls and all African girls rock!
